Chronic lymphoid leukemia (CLL) is a heterogeneous hematologic malignancy with a prolonged disease course, evolving treatment paradigms, and substantial variation in patient characteristics and outcomes. While clinical trials provide critical efficacy data, they often underrepresent older patients, those with comorbidities, and individuals receiving complex treatment sequences over long follow-up periods. Robust real-world evidence is therefore essential to understand how CLL is managed in routine clinical practice and how therapies perform across the full spectrum of patients.
Research challenge
Researchers sought to characterize chemotherapy exposure patterns and subsequent clinical outcomes among patients with CLL in routine care. Key challenges included accurately identifying lines of therapy over time, capturing dose intensity and treatment switches, and linking these exposures to meaningful outcomes such as survival, complications, and healthcare utilization. Achieving this required longitudinal visibility across care settings and sufficient clinical detail to reflect disease severity, comorbidities, and treatment decision-making.
